Shopify Updates Q2 2024

At the end of every month, I will post a compilation of Shopify related updates, trends and insights. These insights will be most relevant to Shopify Plus merchants, but new and growing brands can also benefit. These updates are jampacked with stats, app recommendations and strategic guidance.

Shopify is launching new features and tools to help partners and developers build better ecommerce experiences for merchants:

  • Customer account UI extensions are included in the Checkout and Customer Accounts Extensibility developer preview.
  • Shopify just released a new free theme called Trade. A professional theme specifically designed for wholesale.
  • Shopify is deprecating the Plus Wholesale Channel on April 30, 2024 in favor of the new B2B features on the platform.Partners are advised to help clients migrate to the new B2B tools.
  • Shopify Audiences v2.2 helps merchants find more customers and maximize ad performance across top ad platforms, powered by Shopify's commerce insights.
  • New maximum value for gift cards - Effective May 15, 2024, a maximum value of $2,000USD (or equivalent in global currencies) has been added to issued gift cards.
  • A benefit of migrating to the new checkout is Address validation. It is now integrated for both the shipping and billing address step. The feature is turned on automatically for Checkout One merchants and can be disabled in the Address collection preferences section of Settings > Checkout.
  • Shop Pay Installments Premium, merchants can offer buyers flexible payment options in real-time including interest-free payments for 6 or 12 months, and monthly installments at longer terms–18 and 24 months.
  • Shop Cash is a buyer rewards program that allows buyers to earn Shop Cash on all eligible Shop Pay purchases. Buyers can then redeem the Cash on purchases in the app.

In terms of broader ecommerce trends, some takeaways from this Shopify Blog

  • The continued growth of the subscription economy, with beauty, personal care, food and beverage being the top verticals. 
  • The rise of social commerce, especially on TikTok, with 61% of users engaging in e-commerce behaviors on the platform. Although - Joe Biden has just signed a bill to ban TikTok unless it’s sold to a US company. Source
  • The ongoing shift towards DTC-first models, with DTC ecommerce sales expected to reach $212.9 billion by 2024.
